Information regarding drugs and dry mouth is not precise.
The data contained herein are based on information obtained
from
the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and several U.S. drug compendia. In addition, the general medical literature was searched and reviewed electronically with Medline. The material presented in
Drymouth.info is our best interpretation of the available data.
The information shown in the "Search for Drugs" section may generally
be used to determine whether a drug is xerogenic or not. But it is more
difficult to determine how often dryness occurs and how grievous it is.
It is important to note that when an estimate of frequency is cited e.g.
"Drymouth incidence = 10% or greater", this refers to the frequency which
the event of dry mouth has been reported by patients taking this drug.
Such assessments are a reasonably valid indicator of the likelihood of
a complaint of xerostomia in treated patients. It does not necessarily
follow that the drug concerned caused dry mouth in those individuals.
